Natural Light!

Natural light is essential to our wellbeing, especially in West Michigan, where the long winter months can feel gloomy. However, bringing natural light into a basement can be a challenge. While artificial lighting is important, incorporating windows or doors to maximize natural light is key to transforming a basement into a warm, inviting space.

In one project, the client wanted to brighten their office and living area. The office had only one window, and while it wasn’t shaded by a deck, the surrounding trees limited sunlight. Additionally, the window faced the neighbor's house, offering little inspiration for the creative workspace. Originally, the office was designed with an entry from the hallway, preventing light from reaching the living room.

To solve this, we made two suggestions:

Add a Window Under the Deck: Though not always ideal, a window under the deck offered a view of the wooded backyard, frequented by deer, creating a tranquil and restorative atmosphere.

Install French Doors: Replacing the hallway entry with French doors allowed light to flow between the office and living room, making the space feel more cohesive and airy.

These changes transformed the office into a bright, inspiring area, perfectly blending functionality and aesthetics.

In another project, a client’s basement had two windows under the deck but still felt dark compared to their light-filled main floor. To address this, we suggested adding a third window on the side of the basement, strategically positioned for privacy and maximum sunlight.

Additionally, we created a pass-through in the kitchenette wall to allow light from the new window to reach the stairway landing. This not only brightened the space but made the basement feel as welcoming as the upper levels of the home.

At Restorative Homes, we prioritize natural light in every basement finishing project. Whether it’s through adding windows, doors, or creative architectural elements, we aim to eliminate the "dungeon-like" feeling and create spaces that refresh and restore. After all, every home deserves to whisper, “Welcome home.”
